Residential Low Rise

Herizon House Women’s Shelter

Ajax, Canada

The development of this new women’s shelter involved the addition to and conversion of a former police station building. The residence portion of the building is comprised of 25 beds, arranged in a U-shaped courtyard configuration. This arrangement creates a strong internal focus for the building and is centred upon the communal living area and the exterior courtyard with secured play area for children. Administrative functions for staff are located within the newly renovated existing building, which also serves as the main entrance from its prominent corner site location. Security concerns were a major influence in the design of the shelter, however, transparency and natural light is provided by the careful placement of windows and entrances. Despite the necessary security requirements of its residents, the new shelter conveys a sense of warmth, openness and tranquility within its walls.
