Windsor Energy Centre

Windsor, Canada

In an effort to provide a self-sufficient energy solution for its new hotel operations at Casino Windsor, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation commissioned our design-build team to investigate and test various design scenarios to achieve this infrastructure ambition.  After developing several schematic designs, the preferred solution satisfied several important existing conditions.  These included design sensitivity to the downtown urban streetscape condition, as well as the need to balance any new intervention against the flamboyant aesthetic of the Casino itself.  Located on top of an existing multi-storey parking garage, the new structural framework for this power plant had to be carefully threaded through the various levels of the existing concrete structure.  This state of the art energy centre has been designed to provide all heating and cooling for the new 35-storey hotel building adjacent to the Casino.  Once completed, the centre will house four large cogeneration units and associated chillers, cooling towers and electrical switchgear.  The massive scale of this equipment required that the design team to conceptualize design strategies that diminish the visual mass of the energy centre addition in deference to the glamour of the Casino.
